Many of my friends have switched their photo activities to Instagram and, more recently, Mlkshk. And Flickr’s broken “what’s new from your friends” page is to blame. Both of those sites use a plain old one-page reverse-chronological view of your friends’ photos…just scroll back through to see what’s going on. The primary advantage of that view is that it tells a story. Ok, it’s a backwards story like Memento, but that kind of backwards story is one we’re increasingly adept at understanding. The Flickr recent uploads page doesn’t tell any stories.

i love this metaphor of how news feeds and timelines that we are used to in the social web is a bit like telling a story backwards, like in Memento

The most important page on Flickr

Incumbents are encumbered.

Encumbered with the knowledge of business as usual. Encumbered with sunk costs and supply chains. Encumbered with employee who’ve “always done it this way”. Encumbered with shareholders to appease and market share to protect.

Incumbents say these these encumbrances are competitive advantages. Barriers to entry.

But the entrants. The entrants are free to re-imagine, to reinvent, to think different. To make risky bets on unproven ideas and partners. They have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

And as this chart, and history, suggests the opportunity is in entrants. More so now than ever before.

amazing to see that RIM has not only held ground, but in fact, has gone up! (and samsung’s going strong, as it does with TVs and things vs Sony)

Why are we listening to the Bush administration people anyway? They didn’t GET bin Laden. They’re like the Winklevoss Twins of getting bin Laden — if you were the guys that killed bin Laden, you would’ve killed bin Laden!

foursquare gets a shoutout in Fortune magazine piece highlighting the boards of different companies. This was a fun shoot to do up in Times Square. (Aug 2011, pg 184) (by dpstyles™ – clickthru for SUPERSIZE PIC)

The crazy thing is that they highlighted 7 boards (er, “board of directors”) – the others being such superstars as Proctor & Gamble & Berkshire Hathaway.  #amazing
